Summer Squash

Summer squash holds its place in our heart as one of the first bright, colorful signs of the summer season. But let's all be honest– does anyone really LOVE summer squash? When you think of it, what comes to mind? The large green zucchini of our childhoods, bland, too soft, oversalted, and WATERY.  But what if I told you there was more, that the possibilities are endless? That they could be crunchy and crisp, sweet and buttery, all at the same time. That they can hold onto flavors from aromatics, yet stand up on their own. Turns out it is...

Henry’s Favorite Wine (These Days)

The Somlo Hill in northwest Hungary is an extinct volcano that rises up dramatically out of the seemingly endless plains that surround it. Its basalt rich soil has much in common with Sicily's Mount Etna, though the latter is still a very active volcano. My attraction to Hungarian wine is deep and overarching. To this day it's a very localized, even personal affair. For a small country, it has 22 unique wine regions producing mostly small batch wines that try to speak to you specifically. Today we're going to talk about dahlias. They're the flower of the season and a hot commodity. Dahlias are really lovely, and they're in season from June to about late September. It's a pretty long season, so you can enjoy them for a while.  We just got our first crop a few weeks ago from McGrath Family Farm in Camarillo, California. It's a 300 acre...

Gjelina Group Goes to the Market: Eli's Bees Candy Pollen

Eli Lichter-Marck of Eli’s Bees is a contagiously excited presence. He is a local beekeeper in the Santa Monica Mountains and produces honey like you've never tasted before. Recently I woke up to an early morning text from him of a picture of this incredible candy-looking pollen. The colors were so vibrant — purples and blues, greens and oranges — that I, like Eli, immediately got overwhelmed with excitement.  “Pollen is the lifesource of the honeybee. It provides them with the protein needed for the colony to grow and thrive. As honey bees fly from blooming flower to blooming flower, granules of...
